CUSTOM BUDGET PERIODS

Your budget does not have to reset on the first.

Calendar months are convenient labels. They are not always the best boundaries for a household whose paydays and major bills follow a different rhythm.

Anchor the period to real cash flow

A custom period can begin near a predictable payday and end before the next planning cycle. The important rule is consistency: transactions, scheduled obligations, budget limits, income, and progress should all use the same start and end dates.

Do not assume one bill per period

Longer periods can contain two occurrences of a biweekly payment, while an every-other-month obligation can skip a period entirely. Generate occurrences from the recurrence rule and actual dates rather than from the period label.

Carry the ending cash forward

Future planning should begin from the prior period’s projected ending position and then apply the next period’s activity. Skipping intervening periods can make a distant plan look better or worse than the actual cash-flow chain.
